Why Am I Getting A "Cannot Change the Multi-Select Value" Error When Updating My Flowchart?

Issue

When I try to update my Workflows Flowchart, I see an error, "Unable to update schema - request encountered one or more errors. Cannot change the multi-select value of [value] field on schema [value] because it is used in the [value] transition in the flowchart schema [value]"

Environment

Workflows

Cause

In order for mapping between any two fields to be successful, the two fields must be identical, including multi-select/single select status. If two fields are already mapped to each other and you attempt to update one field from single-select to multi-select, an error will occur ("Unable to update schema - request encountered one or more errors. Cannot change the multi-select value of [] field on schema [] because it is used in the [] transition in the flowchart schema []").

Resolution steps

To work around this, the mapping between the two fields can be temporarily removed, then each field can be updated from single --> multi, then the mapping can be re-added. If the field is used in multiple downstream Tasks, every instance of the field in every linked Task must be set to multi-select.

A user that has sufficient permission to edit the Schema can follow these steps:

-Go to the Flowchart Schema.
-Remove the link between the two tasks (click the circular node directly to the right of the field in the first Task box to highlight the dotted line representing the transition in blue, then click the "trash" icon that appears on the blue highlighted transition line. If the flowchart is large, you may need to scroll to see the trash icon).
-Remove links between additional downstream Tasks if needed (repeat above step for additional Tasks.)
-Set the relevant fields to Multi-Select. (Click the field in relevant Task box to display 'Edit Field Mappings' sidebar on the right side of the screen, then check the 'Multi-Select' checkbox right above 'Outbound Mappings'. Repeat for each Task box.)
-Re-link the two Tasks. (Hover over the "Study Design ELN" field on the Flowchart Task. A circular node will appear to the right of the field name. Click this node and drag to the appropriate field on the next Task.)
-Re-link fields on additional Tasks as needed (Repeat above for additional Tasks.)
