What happened
Between December 4, 2025 and December 12, 2025, Notebook Entry exports were generated without certain metadata information. This issue has been resolved; however any Entries exported during this timeframe may need re-exported to ensure complete Entry exports..
All underlying data in Benchling Entries remains intact and accessible. The issue only affected the display of this metadata in Entry exports..
What is the impact
Between December 4, 2025 to December 12, 2025, the following metadata was not included Notebook Entry exports and Review Snapshots:
- Page Metadata: Entry title, author information, creation date, and modification timestamps that normally appear in the header/footer of each page
- Review History Table: Summary table of review actions, reviewer names, timestamps, and status changes
- Review Comment History: Comments associated with each review state change
This issue impacted all export Notebook Entry export types, including:
- Single entry PDF or HTML exports (via the User Interface)
- Folder/bulk PDF or HTML exports (via the User Interface)
- API-initiated entry exports
- Review Snapshots
Highlighted Missing Metadata from Notebook Entries or Review Snapshots
Resolution
The Benchling team has already reached out to affected customers. We can provide assistance identifying which specific Entries were exported during this timeframe via our Benchling Support team. Customers can then re-export the impacted Entries, or work with our team for additional assistance, depending on the type of export impacted. For assistance, please contact our Benchling support team at support@benchling.com and include “Notebook Entry Export Metadata Issue” in the subject.
How to Re-Export Notebook Entries
Depending on how the original export was performed, follow the appropriate instructions below to re-export your Entries with complete metadata:
Option 1: Re-Export a Single Notebook Entry (UI)
Use this method if you need to export individual Entries via the user interface.
- Open the Notebook Entry you wish to re-export.
- Click the Information icon (i) on the right side of the Entry.
- At the bottom of the Information panel, click Export Entry.
- The export will be emailed to you, and you will be prompted to download a .zip file containing your Entry export and any attached files.
Option 2: Re-Export Folders or Multiple Entries (Bulk Export)
If you originally performed a bulk export of a folder or project, follow these steps to re-export the bulk item:
- Navigate to the folder containing the Entries you wish to re-export.
- Right-click on the folder and select Export.
- In the Export Data modal, select PDF or HTML as your export format.
- Click Export. The exported files will be emailed to you.
Alternative method: You can also export from the “Projects” view by clicking the dropdown menu, selecting the projects or folders you want to export, and choosing PDF or HTML format.
Option 3: Re-Export Review Snapshots
Review Snapshots that were generated during the impact window will also be missing metadata. To request assistance regenerating Review Snapshots on your Tenant, please reach out to our Support Team at support@benchling.com
Option 4: Re-Export Notebook Entries via API
If you originally exported entries programmatically via the Benchling API, we suggest performing new API calls to re-export impacted Entries. For assistance identifying the API IDs of impacted Entries, please reach out to our Support Team at support@benchling.com
- Use the API ID of an Entry to generate a new export via the Exports API endpoint
- The new exports will contain complete metadata.
