Benchling has addressed an issue where audit events were not generated for resubmitted rows in structured tables. This issue occurred only under limited circumstances and did not result in any loss of data. There is no impact on Schema Columns or downstream data (such as Results and Entities).
Key Definition
Custom Column - a column added to a Structured Table that is not part of the schema or the table’s functionality. The values in this column are only saved and viewable inside the Notebook entry.
What Happened?
After a system change to how formulas are evaluated in structured tables (see Table Formula Updates), already submitted tables that contained those changed formulas were shown to be re-submittable. When users manually resubmitted the tables, that resubmission did not generate audit log entries.
This missing audit events issue began on March 21, 2025 for Validated Cloud Production tenants and on January 17, 2025 for all other tenants.
The missing audit events issue was resolved in all non-Validated Cloud tenants on April 2, 2025 and for Validated Cloud tenants on April 11, 2025 in patch 2025.1.4.
What does this mean for you?
This issue only applies if you rely on Custom Columns that contain formulas in your structured tables (excluding Inventory Tables) and if all of the following conditions were true:
- The table was in a submitted state prior to Jan 19th (or Mar 21st for Validated Cloud)
- The table contained custom columns
- The custom columns contained a formula that was recently updated (see Table Formula Updates)
- The user opened the table after January 19th or March 21st for Validated Cloud
- The user re-submitted the table without making any other modifications to any data in that cell
- Audit events will be missing for any resubmitted cells in Custom Columns only. Schema Columns are not affected—Audit Events were correctly generated for them, ensuring that changes impacting structured results or entities are still properly tracked.
The Entry Version History still retains of the older Custom Column values, offering a fallback for traceability.
What happens next?
Benchling has issued a fix to prevent the audit log issue going forward. Although there is no data loss to address, Benchling is contacting customers impacted by this issue proactively to share the impacted tables If you have questions or believe you may have been impacted, please contact support@benchling.com.
