Why Don’t Locked Columns in Templates Automatically Populate Formulas?

Issue

An administrator expected a locked column in an unstructured table within a template to automatically populate formulas down the column. However, new rows do not inherit the formula. The admin believes this is a bug but wants clarification on whether this is expected behavior.

Environment

Product Area: Templates

Resolution

This behavior is expected. Here’s some clarification on the caveats of this feature:

1. Unstructured tables do not support automatic formula population.

  • Unlike structured tables, plain tables do not have built-in support for default column values or formula inheritance across new rows.

2. Default values apply only in specific conditions:

  • The table must be structured (not unstructured).
  • The table must have only one row when set in a template.
  • Any new rows added from the template will then inherit the default values.
