How do I link translations for DNA sequences with alternative start codons?

Issue

I need to link a translation to my Benchling-supported standard or nonstandard DNA sequence with an alternate start codon.

Environment

Molecular Biology suite

Cause

Benchling can't automatically determine if a start codon should translate to an alternate amino acid, which may be possible with some nonstandard genetic code tables (ex. Table 11, bacteria + archaea). You need to specify that the translation is using an alternative start codon (methionine).

Resolution steps

  1. Click Features, then select Translation to navigate to the translation(s) using an alternative start codon.
  2. Check First codon: Translate as methionine to designate that the translation is using an alternative start codon.
