Note: We're continually improving the Benchling platform to ensure it keeps up with our customers' needs. As of September 29, 2021, we replaced Workflows with an updated version. If you are currently using this version of Workflows and want to learn more, contact your Account Manager. If you are new to Workflows, visit Workflows overview.
What are registration tables?
Registration tables enable users to register the following from a Workflow Stage Entry:
-
New Entities
-
New Entities and Child entities
-
New Child entities of an existing Entity
Insert your registration table into your workflow stage entry
In your entry's formatting bar, click Insert and then Registration Table. In the Insert registration table modal (picture below), select the schema for which you want to create entities or child entities for, the desired Registry Naming Option, and designate which type of Registration Table you'd like to insert (e.g. Create new entities). To learn more about the new registration tables, please visit this article.

Create a child entity of an existing entity
Following the steps above, select a child entity schema (e.g. Plasmid Prep) in the Insert registration table modal. Once inserted in the entry, enter the parent entity in the column provided followed by any other metadata fields specific to this child entity.

After data entry, click Submit to register your child entity. The Entity column will populate with the ID of your registered child entity.
Registering batches into your workflow stage entry
Note: The following instructions applies if the Batch feature is configured for your tenant. Batches are legacy feature. While visible in the UI, the creation of new batch schemas will no longer be available. As child entities offer more functionality than their batch counterparts, Benchling recommends using child entities instead of batches.
Click Insert and then Registration Table. In the Insert registration table modal, click Register batches at the top and select the schema for which you want to create entities/batches for, desired Registry Naming Options, and designate which type of Registration Table you'd like to insert:
-
If you would like to create news entities and a batch for each entity, select Batch.
-
If you would like to create new batches of existing entities, select Batch.

Create a batch of an existing entity
Under the “Entity” column, type in the name or Registry ID of the entity you would like to create a batch for.
Once you've selected the entity of interest, you'll see that the metadata of the entity will load in the adjacent columns. Enter batch metadata into the batch field columns adjacent to the populated entity columns. After data entry, click Submit to register your batch.

The Batch column will populate with the Batch ID of your registered batch.
Simultaneously create a new entity and child entity
To create a new entity and batch, follow the steps outlined above to insert a new batch registration table. Rather than searching for a new entity in the “Entity” column, leave this column blank. Provide all other entity and batch information, then click Register. Once registered, the Entity column will be populated with the Registry entity that you've just created. You will not be able to to register if:
-
you have entered incorrect data types
-
you have not completed required field
