Project and Folder structures for different teaching loads

  • Updated

Organize course materials and student work based on your teaching load

You will want to implement an organized, naming structure for how students submit or store files related to your course. This structure can be dependent on many factors such as if you’re teaching different courses or multiple sections of the same course as well as the type of peer access you want students to have. We explore these examples below as they may apply to your teaching situation and how to set up appropriate Projects and Folders for these situations. Please keep in mind that permissions are set on the Project level and cannot be configured on the Folder level.

Different courses that you’re teaching
If you teach different courses, create a different Organization for each course and invite students to join the respective courses. Make Projects that corresponds to a specific course and set access permissions to the appropriate organization. Use “READ” for course materials you don’t want edited and “WRITE” for student-driven, graded work. To better organize assignments in a Project, have students create folders for themselves based on a standard naming convention (ex. “Last Name, First Name“ or “Full Name“) where you can track their work throughout the semester.

Multiple sections for the same course (with peer access)

If a course you’re teaching is typically split into multiple sections, you can still keep your students in the same Organization with the appropriate access. Create multiple Projects for each course section and inside those projects, have corresponding students from those sections create folders for themselves.

Multiple sections for the same course (with NO peer access)

If you prefer students not to have access to each other’s files, instruct each student to create a separate Project and add you or a TA with “ADMIN“ access. Ensure Projects have a standard naming system that makes it easy to navigate especially if this is for different courses or multiple course sections. Separate your students’ files and your own by starring your Projects and switching between view filters.
