Printing Labels in Benchling

In this article, we will take a tour of all of the label printing capabilities in Benchling. We will answer questions like: 

  • How can I print a label? 
  • Are inventory items the only benchling item I can print a label for? 
  • Are there multiple ways to print a label? 
  • How can I print labels in bulk?

How to Print a Label

  1. Navigate to the item you want to print labels for. (Bulk: To print labels for multiple items, select each item from a list view, like the Project tab, registry search, or a worklist.)
  2. Click the Print icon.
    1. If you are on the container details page, the icon displays next to the barcode.
    2. If you are printing multiple items, the icon displays in the top-right corner.
  3. In the print modal, select the Label Template and Printer from the drop-down menus and enter the number of copies.
  4. Click Print

Note: If you’re printing with BarTender, don’t close the browser window until all labels have printed, as your web browser must communicate with BarTender during the entire printing process.

Print from the Notebook

Users can print Barcodes directly from a Notebook Table

  1. Highlight the table cells that you want to print.
  2. Click the 3 dots in the right top corner of the table.
  3. Select Print barcodes.
  4. In the print modal, select the Label Template and Printer from the drop-down menus and enter the number of copies.
  5. Click Print

Note: You cannot print the same barcode twice (i.e. when two cells have the same barcode)

Print from the Inventory

To print a label for a box:

  1. Navigate to the box using the inventory application or global search.
  2. Click the Print icon in the top right corner of the toolbar.
  3. In the print modal, select the Label Template and Printer from the drop-down menus and enter the number of copies.
  4. Click Print

To print labels for each container in a box:

  1. Select all items in the box using the check box at the very top
  2. Click the Print icon.
  3. In the print modal, select the Label Template and Printer from the drop-down menus and enter the number of copies.
  4. Click Print

Print from the Registry

Benchling will allow labels to be printed for entities in the registry in addition to items in the inventory.

  1. Navigate to the item you want to print labels for. (Bulk: To print labels for multiple items, select each item from a list view, like the Project tab, registry search, or a worklist.)
  2. Click the Print icon.
    1. If you are on the entity details page, click the 3 dot icon in the upper right hand corner.
    2. If you are printing multiple items, the icon displays in the top-right corner.
  3. In the print modal, select the Label Template and Printer from the drop-down menus and enter the number of copies.
  4. Click Print.  

Print labels in bulk

To easily print multiple labels at once, use the global search to search and select the items you want to print labels for.  

  1. In the expanded search view, select all entities or containers you would like to print labels for.
  2. Click the Print icon in the top right corner of the toolbar.
  3. In the print modal, select the Label Template and Printer from the drop-down menus and enter the number of copies.
  4. Click Print
