Benchling In Vivo is a web-based platform that supports end-to-end management of in vivo studies. This guide will help you navigate the tenant, understand core navigation patterns, and find where to perform common actions like managing studies, animals, and samples.
Navigate Benchling In Vivo
In the global navigation bar, you see icons for different functions and applications in your tenant. We will walk through the common ones, seen below.
The global navigation bar is ever-present and is located on the left side of the screen. Use this navigation bar to access all functionality within your In Vivo tenant, including:
- Studies: View, create, and manage studies in any state (Active, Draft, Completed, Cancelled)
- Colony: Access the vivarium-wide animal and cage inventory
- Samples: Manage and filter all registered samples across studies
- Tasks: View and execute assigned tasks
- Reviews: Review studies requiring approval
- Requests: Track internal study requests
- Create new study: Shortcut to create a new study
- Manage team: Configure team settings and permissions (admins only)
- Account: Configure settings for your account like name, timezone, and password
- Devices: Configure connected devices and mappings
- Help: View articles and contact support
- Log out: Sign out of your user session
Note: Hovering over each icon in the menu shows a tooltip with the name of the icon.
Studies
The Studies dashboard shows a list of all the active, draft, completed, and cancelled studies. When you click into a Study from one of these lists, you see an additional vertical navigation bar on the left called the study navigation bar.
Use this menu bar to access different functionality within a study, including:
- Overview: Study metadata, group assignments, and review status
- Schedule: Timeline of scheduled tasks.
- Animals: Table of enrolled animals with identifiers and metadata
- Cages: Grid view of cages, contents, and layout
- Graphs: Visualize data like body weight or survival curves
- Workflow: Execute linked tasks such as dosing, measurements, and sampling
- Treatment groups: Create and manage groups and treatment assignments
- Attachments: Upload and view study-related files and links
- Samples: View samples collected in this study
- Observations: Qualitative records (e.g., behavior, health status)
- Doses: Record doses by selecting treatments, animals, and dosing calculations
- Data tables: Structured custom tables (e.g., PK, tolerance data)
- Import: Upload data via .csv or integrations
- Export: Download raw or analyzed data
- Settings: Modify study name, preset, and metadata

Search and filter
You can search and filter for a variety of objects within Benchling In Vivo. The search feature is present in multiple locations across Benchling In Vivo, providing tailored search functionality depending upon the location where the search occurs.
Note: There is no global search available in Benchling In Vivo, so the location in the Benchling In Vivo tenant where you do a particular search is critical to the results that are produced.
Search for objects
Search bars are always located at the top of any page where search is available. Search bars are marked by a magnifying glass on the left and generally have a tool tip written out about what values can be used in the search (e.g., Search by study name or study code).
To search for an object using a search bar:
- Click into the search bar
- Type in the key values to search by
- Press Enter
- If you would like to view more or less columns in the search results, use the Show dropdown menu to select or deselect columns
- To clear the search and start over, click Reset in the search bar
Note: the accepted search terms vary based on which search bar you use and are usually described in grey text within the search bar.
Search for objects from global navigation using the following pages

Studies to search for active, drafted, completed, or canceled studies using the study name or study code
- Note: Navigate to the corresponding status tab (active, drafts, completed, canceled) to search for a study with the respective status.
- Colony > Cages subtab to search for cages by cage number or cage name
- Colony > Animals subtab to search for animals by animal identifier, number, or cage
- Samples to search for samples by sample identifier

Reviews to search for pending or completed reviews by review name
- Note: Navigate to the corresponding status tab (pending or complete) to search for a study with the respective status.
Search for objects within a study using the following pages:
- Schedule to search for tasks by task title

Animals to search for animals by animal identifier, number, or cage
- Note: you must specify the identifier you are searching for using the dropdown to the right of the search bar
- Workflow to search for cages or animals based on cage or animal identifiers
- Attachments to search for uploaded attachments by file name
- Samples to search for samples by sample identifier
- Observations to search for animal observations by animal name or observation
- Doses to search for doses by animal name
- Data tables to search for data tables by data table name
Note: Searches done within a study are automatically filtered down to objects within that study
Set filters in search
In most cases, a filter menu is located to the left of a search bar. You can use the filter options to further limit the results shown in a table or from a specific search to better locate the object of interest. Different tables will have different filter options based upon the object type in the table.
To filter within a table:
- Click Filter in the upper left of the table
- Choose All conditions logic if all set filters must be true of the results or Any condition logic if at least one set filters must be true of the results
- Set the filter using the dropdowns available
- Select add condition to set additional filters
- Click Filter to apply the filters to the table using the specified logic
- Remove a filter by clicking the X next to the condition at the top of the table, or from the Filter menu
Note: resetting the search from the search bar does not remove the filters
Manage your account
Once you're signed in, it's important to ensure your account is configured with accurate, up-to-date information. This helps you personalize account settings and that recover your account if needed.
Change your password
Note: If your organization uses SSO, password changes may be disabled in Benchling In Vivo.
- Click Account from the bottom-left of the Navigation bar
- Click the Password tab
- Enter your current password, then your new one
- Click Save
Update your timezone
To ensure timestamps are recorded and displayed in your local time:
- Click My Account
- Go to the Profile tab
- Select the Your timezone dropdown
- Choose your local time zone
- Click Save
Frequently asked questions
Q: Can I edit a completed or cancelled study?
A: Not directly. You’ll need to click Resume Study from Settings > Danger Zone to re-enable editing.
Q: How do I contact support?
A: Click Help or Message Support in the navigation to submit a request or open a live chat.
Q: What should I do if I forget my password?
A: On the login page, click Forgot Password, enter your email, and follow the instructions.
