How to Repeat an Analysis in Benchling Insights

In Benchling Insights, repeating an analysis allows you to reuse data transformations and chart configurations on new datasets, saving time and ensuring consistency. This can be done through copying an existing analysis, replacing data sources, or applying saved templates. This guide will walk you through each method, enabling you to efficiently rerun your analyses with updated data.

For a deeper understanding of how analysis works in Benchling, please read the Introduction to Analysis.

1. Copying an Analysis

Duplicating an existing analysis is useful if you want to reuse the entire setup, including data transformations and visualizations, but with new or updated data sources.

Steps to Copy an Analysis:

  1. Open the analysis you want to copy.
  2. Click the “...” menu at the top-right corner of the analysis.
  3. Select Duplicate.
  4. In the pop-up window, choose a new location and name for the copied analysis.
  5. The new analysis will be named “Copy of [Original Analysis Name]” and will be identical to the original, but independent of it.

2. Replacing Analysis Tables

Once you’ve duplicated an analysis, you may want to replace the original data tables with new datasets. This process allows you to rerun all the transformations and charts on the new data.

Steps to Replace Analysis Tables:

  1. Inside the copied analysis, go to the table you want to replace.
  2. Click the “...” menu next to the analysis table.
  3. Select Replace Table.
  4. Choose the method to bring in the new dataset (e.g., CSV upload, Registry, Notebook entry, or other sources).
  5. The new data will be used in place of the previous table, and all associated transformations will be automatically rerun on the new dataset.

For more details on how to use analysis tables, you can read Viewing and using analysis tables.

3. Using Analysis Templates

For more standardized workflows, saving an analysis as a template allows you to apply the same transformations and visualizations to different datasets repeatedly.

Saving an Analysis as a Template:

  1. Configure your analysis with the necessary transformations and visualizations.
  2. Click the “...” menu at the top-right corner of the analysis.
  3. Select Save as Analysis Template.
  4. Name your template and save it to a Template Collection.
  5. For each table, choose whether it’s variable (for new data each time) or static (using the original data).

Applying an Analysis Template:

  1. Start a new analysis by adding the new dataset you want to work with.
  2. Open the “...” menu and select Apply Analysis Template.
  3. Choose the saved template from your Template Collection.
  4. Map your new data to the template’s variables (e.g., columns).
  5. Click Apply Template to run the saved transformations and views on your new dataset.

Repeating an analysis in Benchling Insights is a straightforward process, whether you're duplicating an analysis, replacing tables, or using saved templates. This feature allows you to automate repetitive tasks, maintain consistency in your analysis, and save time on configuring transformations and charts from scratch.
