Note: Notebook writer is a part of Benchling Intelligence. See the Benchling Intelligence page for information on how to request access to Notebook writer and other AI-based features. This feature is in beta, so keep in mind that it is a work in progress.

The Notebook writer feature uses AI to help you write and edit your Notebook entries. Type a prompt, and the AI system writes text that you can insert. It can help with things like:

  • Writing a protocol
  • Summarizing a Notebook entry
  • Formatting your findings to match style guidelines

When you send a prompt, the AI system reads the text in your Notebook entry and responds accordingly.

How to use Notebook writer

  1. Open a Notebook entry.
  2. Click AI tools and select Write text.
  3. If desired, attach any relevant files. Various file types are supported, including PDF, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. For example, you can ask it to pull the protocol out of a paper or summarize a slide deck.
  4. Enter your prompt, then click the green Play button to submit the prompt. After the prompt is processed, you will see the AI-generated response, which may include insertable content.
  5. Click Insert at the bottom of the window to insert it into your Notebook entry. If the AI system is not proposing any content to insert, you will see a note that no content will be inserted.copilot_basic.gif

Example prompts

Try out these prompts:

  • Write a protocol for Gibson assembly
  • Write an introduction for this entry
  • Summarize the purpose of this experiment

Limitations

AI-generated responses may contain mistakes; always double-check the accuracy of AI-generated content.

This feature is not intended to be used for numerical calculations like analyzing experimental results; AI systems can be error-prone when directly performing calculations, so the AI system is instructed to refuse any such tasks.

The AI system can "see" your text prompt, many details of your Notebook entry, and the text content of any files that you specify. It does not have access to other items in the Benchling system, the contents of attached files in your Notebook entry, or your previous conversation history with the AI system.

Currently, the feature can only generate text content, not tables or other Notebook content.
