Translation Links are special metadata fields, exclusively for DNA-based entity schemas, which link from DNA →  AA entities in the Registry. Translation Links are a great tool for linking any DNA entity to the translated AA that it encodes for, and can help users ensure data integrity within their Registry.

Auto-Fill Translations helps automate the process of filling translation links by discovering registered AA sequences of the schema specified in the Translation Link that can be validly created off one of the 6 reading frames of the DNA sequence you are Auto-Filling.

In the example below, I have a DNA sequence called “HC-DNA-888” with a DNA sequence schema called “Chain_DNA”.

The “Chain_DNA” schema contains 2 fields:

  • “Protein”: a single select Translation Link field that links to the AA schema: “Chain”

  • “Multi protein”: a multi select Translation Link field that links to the AA schema: “Recombinant Protein”

Based on the schema details above, the “Chain_DNA” schema allows us to link any singular registered AA entity with the schema Chain”, and any number of registered AA entities with the schema “Recombinant Protein” as it is a multi-select Translation Link field.

[Note] Multi-select Translation Link fields allow multiple matching AA entities to be filled in. If Auto-Fill Translations identifies multiple valid AA entities that can be filled into a single-select Translation Link field, then you may encounter an error. You will need to manually fill in these single-select Translation Link fields if Auto-Fill identifies multiple valid AA entities that can be translated from your target DNA sequence.

Now, with Auto-Fill Translations, you can have Benchling scan through all registered AA entities of the schema types specified in Translation Link schema fields(both “Chain” and “Recombinant Protein”), and:

  • Fill in Translation Links to all valid translated AA entities of the appropriate Schema(s)

  • Create a matching Translation on the sequence map to visualize the translated region.

[Note] If you have any filled existing Translation Links on a DNA sequence you are attempting to Auto-Fill Translations on, the action will re-validate those existing Translation Links as well. If a stale or invalid link is identified, it will be removed as it would not have been filled at the time of the Auto-Fill Translation action.

If you have multiple DNA sequences that you want to Auto-Fill Translations for in a single bulk action, you can multi-select DNA sequence entities from the expanded projects page and Bulk Auto-Fill Translations.
